St Benedict’s School

The RIBA award winning refurbishment and remodelling of this secondary school adopts the plan of a monastic cloister. The new building completes a puzzle of building types and comprises two halls, Music School, Chapel, Modern Languages department, visitor and pupil entrances. A new structure of fair-faced concrete links several existing buildings by a legible circulation system and top-lit central space. A wide roof grid of deep concrete beams reflects light downwards. Upper storeys were prefabricated in cross-laminated timber to minimise site operations and programme.
