Shortlisted for the 2010 Retrofit Awards, the Rankin Building demonstrates the possibilities for re-use of our existing building stock. Formerly a warehouse, new life has been injected, turning the ground floor into a photographic studio with associated offices and apartments above. A new penthouse sits above the cityscape. Re-use of the existing concrete frame brought the client significant programme and cost benefits and reduced the embodied energy of the scheme significantly. Sophisticated analysis of the existing foundations saved cost in strengthening to carry the additional loads from the new third and fourth floors.
