Ivor Crewe Lecture Theatre, University of Essex

Two lecture theatres are contained within a single elliptical enclosure divided by a retractable acoustic partition. The combined 1000 seat capacity space creates the largest lecture theatre in the United Kingdom. The building is partially below ground and great care was taken to integrate foundations, retaining structures and superstructure into one best-value component. The foyer to the main hall is lightweight steel-framed pavilion approached across a bridge of great simplicity detailed to rest lightly on the existing surrounds.
