Downley House

The potential of cross-laminated timber to create complicated structures is demonstrated in the design of this country house. A fully pre-fabricated frame of wooden panels, floors and roof was delivered to an inaccessible site in the South Downs and rapidly assembled. The vaulted central hall is shaded by elliptical glulam arches. The positive carbon footprint and low-embodied energy of the construction system supports the sustainability of this building. Very low infiltration rates and high levels of insulation minimize energy use. Run-off is managed for landscape use and water heated using solar collectors.
