Almere Windhinders, Phase 2
The new-town of Almere outside Amsterdam is a windy place. Shields to create calm spaces have been developed from wind-tunnel studies. The Phase 2 canopy is 82 metres long by 24 metres at its widest point and follows the city streetscape. Shaped in the wind-tunnel to reduce gusts and downdrafts the form resolves the conflicting grids of surrounding superstructures and car-parking levels below and includes large openings for landscaping. The structure is pared down to a minimal composition of tapered columns, gutter beams and frameless glass.
