Orsman Whitmore building shortlisted for WAN Mixed-Use Award

A new-build development comprises studio space for artists and architects with spacious residential apartments above designed by architect-developer Trevor Horne.

By adopting the concrete Cobiax system of voided concrete – one of the first times this technology has been used in-situ in the UK – we enabled long spanning floor slabs with few internal columns. This provided maximum size and flexibility of layout, important to the work of its creative inhabitants, achieving over 600 square metres of space for studios and private apartments. It also brought a number of other advantages: weight reduction, resource efficiency and cost effectiveness through reduced use of concrete and steel reinforcement.
